Superior died Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth. He was born Dec. 20,
1924, in Superior, son of Louis and Bessie (Daitch) Witkin. Harold attended
Carpenter School and Central High School in Superior and was an active alumni
member of Central’s Class of 1941. Harold joined the Army
Air Corps during WWII and served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and Japan. After his military
service, Harold attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison, earning a
degree in journalism and a doctorate of law in 1952. During his college
years, Harold Witkin and Shirley Rich were united in marriage on August 14,
1949, in Duluth, Minnesota. Following the completion
of his law degree, he returned to Superior and was appointed the assistant
district attorney in 1952, and then became Superior’s first full-time city
attorney in 1955. As an attorney, Harold had a very distinguished career.
After serving as the city attorney, he joined the law firm of Hughes,
Anderson and Davis, becoming a partner. The firm later became known as
Witkin, Maki, Weiby and Durst. He retired from law in 1992 and joined the
board of directors of the Community Bank and Trust, serving as chairman of
the board until 2009, at which time the bank was successfully merged with the
National Bank of Commerce. Harold was very involved
in his community, serving as a board member or president of the following
organizations: YMCA, Catholic Charities, Superior Vocational Center, Temple
Beth El, B’nai Brith, Kiwanis, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Wisconsin State
Board of Governors and the Council of Christians and Jews. Preceding him in death
were his parents; brothers and sisters-in-law, Max and Sara Witkin, and Paul
and Dorothy Witkin; brothers-in-law, Ben Sigler and Cy Kaster. Survivors include his
wife of 60 years, Shirley; daughter, Leslie (Bruce) Rosenberg, St. Louis
Park, Minn.; son, Perry (Cindy) Witkin, Edina, Minn.; grandchildren, Brian
(Samantha) Rosenberg, St. Louis Park, Mark Rosenberg, Minneapolis, and Ari
Witkin and Eli Witkin, both of Edina; sister, Shirley Sigler, Duluth;
sister-in-law, Barbara Kaster, St. Paul; and nieces and nephews. The funeral service will
be held at noon, Sunday, May 24 at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street,
Superior, with Rabbi Amy Bernstein officiating. Pallbearers will be Mark
Rosenberg, Brian Rosenberg, Ari Witkin, Eli Witkin, Mark Sigler, Mark Kaster
and Michael Witkin. Burial will be in the
Superior Hebrew Cemetery, Superior. Shiva services will be
held at 7 p.m. Sunday and Monday, at the Witkin residence, 1119 N. 22nd St.,
Superior. Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donor’s choice. |
